Final figure in for World Record Attempt

Hi all

We have just received this from the ABC.

Dear Star Party hosts,

Congratulations on being officially amazing! With your help, Australia has set a new Guinness World Record for the most people stargazing across multiple venues.

Our final count is 46,345 people – eclipsing the previous record of 7,960 people. We are confident that this record will stand for some time. In addition to the participants who were officially counted, there were huge numbers of volunteers, parents, teachers and community members who ran and attended events. Some sites experienced adverse weather but stargazers still came out in their thousands to join in. In total, the world record attempt brought together more than 62,000 people at almost 300 Star Parties held in every state and territory. You have all been counted and we thank you!

This achievement would not have been possible without your energy, enthusiasm and patience as a Star Party host. The response to our record attempt was greater than we ever anticipated and is a testament to our nation’s passion for science and astronomy. Thank you and congratulations!
